THE ROLE OF TEACHER IN IMPROVING A STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

Suhendar is an English student, Teacher Training and Education Faculty of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University. He was born at 20th of July 1991. He is from Keramat Watu, Serang-Banten. He actives in some organization in his campus now, such as TRAS (Tirtayasa Research and Academic Society), LDK, and ESA (English Student Association). His interests include writing, discussing, and speaking.

 

 

Abstract

The main point to improve student achievement is how a teacher can motivate, guide, and educate the student in their study. A teacher has an important role in a student’s study. A teacher is not only teach or transformation knowledge in teaching learning process, but also how a teacher can guide, educate and motivate the students in their study. In these day many teachers just teaching in the class, they forget to main aim from the teacher it self. Thereby, the students can not to improve their study and achievement. The main point in this essay is give solutions to the teachers how to be a good teacher, what must the teachers do in teaching learning process, and what must the teachers do to improve the students motivation and achievement. In this report essay writing, a writer using an interview method with one of a teacher in Islamic Boarding School of Al-Mubarok and take some theories from the expert. The result of the study showed that the student’s achievement learning will improve if the teachers do some strategies in teaching learning process. The teachers have to motivate, guide, and educate the student’s study. The result also indicates that there is relationship between a teacher’s role in teaching learning process and student achievement.

Introduction

            A teacher has an important role in student’s education. Teacher is some one who not only gives information or knowledge to students through teaching learning process, but also someone who build student’s character. Teacher is educator who transfers of values and someone who guide the students in their study (Sardiman, 2008:125). Teacher’s role in students education is needed, because student’s character is depends on the teacher’s role. If the teacher gives a good role, good example, good attitude, and good education in their study, such as disciplined, give guidance, and be a good friend to student’s learning, the students will have a good character and achievement too. However, if the teachers can not give a good example, good attitude, and good education to their students, such as undisciplined and come late the students have not good character and good education in their study. Thereby, teacher’s roles in education have to balance between transformation knowledge in the class room through teaching learning process and transformation values to students in out side class.

The teacher’s role according to Gage and Berliner; Prof. DR. H. Abin Syamsuddin Makmun (2009:23) said the teacher should be a planner, organizer and evaluator. As a planner, the teacher must prepare what would the teacher do during teaching learning process. In order teaching learning process run well. As an organizer, is someone who creates situation, activities and learning process in the class. As evaluator, the teacher should be gives a final result from teaching learning process.

            In order to improve a student’s achievement, must be there a good relationship between student and teacher. The teacher gives the best teaching, guidance, and attention to students and students also respect. and study hard.  The relationship between teacher’s role in education and in a student’s achievement is needed a good mental, and to be a good mental needed a good teacher’s role in education.

 

 

Discuss

            A teacher has an important role in a student’s study. A teacher is not only teach or transformation knowledge in teaching learning process, but also how a teacher can guide, educate and motivate the students in their study. A teacher should also be someone who guides student rather than someone who is teaching in the classroom. The teacher needs to show respect toward the students so the students also respect the teacher. According to Sardiman, (2008:143), some of the teacher’s roles in education are:

1.      Prey Katz explain teacher’s role as communicator, a good friend who can give a motivation or advice, an inspiring person and supervisor to the student’s learning.

2.      James W. Brown, explain that a duty and roles of teacher are mastering, planning, and preparing a lesson every day, besides that have to control and evaluation students activities.

From these roles, the teachers should attention what must they do as a teacher. What are the roles that have to do in order students achievement can improve, at least students motivation in learning a lesson. The roles of teacher according to Prof. Soetjipto, Drs. Raflis Kosasi (2004:107), in guiding students in order students achievement can improve divided by two roles, there are: duty and role in the class room and duty and role in out class room. In the class room the teachers should make a teaching learning process become a fun learning, and effective learning. Its can the teacher do by starting by giving a motivation in the first learning activity in order the students have a good motivation during learning process. Second, the teachers should make a good condition in the class by create group works to discuss the material given. By this way, students will be more active and feel a good condition in the class because the students can share and discuss with other students. Third, the teacher can use certain media in delivering materials, such as infocus or other media that can visualize the material. By these teacher roles, the student motivation in learning a lesson and motivation to improve their achievement will be happened, because the students have a good teacher that can they ask when they do not understand in their study and have someone that can become a model in their life. While a teacher’s roles in out class according to Prof. Soetjipto, Drs. Raflis Kosasi (2004:110) are: guide the students in commune, do home visit to student’s home, and give enrichment and improve student’s talent. Guide the students in commune with their friends in order the students don’t be miscast friend. The teacher must give attention to students how to be a good commune that can improve their achievement. Home visit done in order teacher know the student’s activities in their home, beside that the teacher can communication with student’s parent about the students it self. Give enrichment and improve student’s talent in order students have a good motivation that they can, that they have a talent and can reach achievement.

            Beside two roles mentioned, in interview with some of the teacher in Islamic boarding school of Al-Mubarok said that the teachers have an important role in student’s education and improve the student’s achievement. He said that the role of teacher in education there are two duty and roles. First, teacher’s role in academic and second, teacher’s role in build a motivation or build in morality, but in improving student’s achievement build a motivation, attitude, and mental students are important thing that must the teachers do. Because the student achievement it’s depend on the student’s motivation. To build student’s motivation, attitude and their mental the teacher should give guidance and give more attention. Such as give guidance, convince that they can reach an achievement. Beside mental that have to teacher build, relationship also have to build, in order there is a good relationship with student. According to Sardiman (2008:147) said that relationship between teacher and student is determined factor. Because as good as anything a teaching learning method used, but if there is no a good relationship it can produce unfavourable result. After students have a good motivation, mental and attitude also there is good relationship between teacher and student, the achievement can easy to student reach.

 

Conclusion

A teacher has an important role in a student’s study. A teacher is not only teach or transformation knowledge in teaching learning process, but also how a teacher can guide, educate and motivate the students in their study. A teacher should also be someone who guides student rather than someone who is teaching in the classroom.

Teacher’s role and student’s achievement has an important relation, because student’s achievement is depend on the teacher it self. If the teacher has a good role to the student, guide the students to be a good person, to be a person who has a good motivation to build their achievement, the student also will become a good student who has a good achievement. But if the teacher does not give a good example, a good role to the students, the student also will not become a good person and can not reach more achievement in their study. Student’s achievement can build from classroom by giving the best teaching, creating fun and effective learning, creating a good condition, and using a media that can visualize the material. Beside transformation knowledge in the classroom well, the important things that can improve the student’s achievement are how a teacher gives guidance, give attention, motivate, and convince the students in their study. if the students have a good motivation, good guidance and have a good mental, also the teacher give the duty and roles in the classroom or in out classroom, the achievement can easy to student reach.
